5 key highlights from Microsoft Ignite 2024

Azure Platform: Transforming Cloud Computing

Azure's commitment to revolutionising enterprise AI is evident in several key announcements. These announcements reflect Azure’s strategic focus on enhancing AI capabilities to support a wide range of applications, from small businesses to large enterprises.

  • Azure AI Foundry - Now with enhanced integrations and the Azure AI Foundry SDK in preview, the platform helps organisations design, customise, and manage AI apps and agents at scale. This development is set to streamline the creation of AI solutions, making it easier for organisations to deploy sophisticated AI applications.

  • Azure AI Search - Updates include a generative query engine and integration with GitHub Models, enhancing retrieval augmented generation (RAG) performance. These updates are designed to improve the accuracy and efficiency of search results, making it easier for users to find relevant information quickly.

  • Azure AI Content Understanding - In preview, this service will simplify building and deploying multimodal AI apps, making it easier and more cost-effective. By enabling the integration of different types of data, Azure AI Content Understanding helps create more comprehensive and versatile AI applications.

  • Azure Managed Redis - Now in preview, this service offers cost-effective caching for AI apps, boosting performance by reducing latency and offloading database traffic. This improvement is crucial for applications that require real-time data processing and high-speed performance.

  • Azure Proactive Resiliency Library (v.2) (APRL) can be used to provide a curated catalogue of resiliency recommendations for workloads running in Azure. Azure Resource Graph can be used to query and help identify non-compliant resources.

  • Azure Monitor Baseline Alerts (AMBA) helps companies to streamline a base set of essential metrics and guidelines ensuring that services are performing optimally. Think pro-active not reactive for Azure monitoring. Monitor AI on Azure platforms (PaaS) , ALZ's, AVD, Networking and specialised workloads. Monitoring packs are available across IaaS and PaaS platforms.

  • Azure Verified Modules (AVM) is an initiative to set a standard for what good infrastructure-as-code module looks like. It is essentially a toolkit with a common code base that improves code quality. The purpose of AVM is to provide a comprehensive library in multiple IaC languages following the principles of the well architected framework.

  • GitHub Copilot for Azure (Preview) revolutionises developer efficiencies (new and experienced) The ability now to ask @azure questions about any Azure Services such as AI, compute, containers, databases, DevOps, network, security, and storage or to simply get help with tasks related to Azure and Azure development all with this Visual Studio Code extension (plus licence).

  • Azure Essentials. Optimising customer cloud investment, elevating reliability, security and ongoing performance of workloads for cloud and AI investments to maximise transformation. Essentially a resource kit to use for a best practice approach using frameworks and tools to ensure reliability, security, performance and efficiencies across 3 main stages in the transformation lifecycle.
