How a government agency uses federated access and MFA to protect its data from potential cyber threats

A bridge over a body of water.

Learn more how a Qatar-based government agency took decisive steps to secure its data. By moving to Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) and integrating multi-factor authentication (MFA), they strengthened their defences against unauthorised access and cyber threats.

A government agency requires the highest security standards available, and preventing unauthorised access to systems is of paramount importance.

Telecommuting is becoming increasingly popular across a range of industries. While it offers many benefits, it also poses significant security risks. Remote workers accessing corporate assets from outside the internal network through an insecure channel can be exploited by cyber attackers.

The need for enhanced data security

As a central institution in Qatar, this government agency processes large amounts of classified information and personal data that must be kept under strict protection at all times. For this organisation, preventing unauthorised system access to systems is a matter of national security.

They needed a foolproof solution to facilitate remote access for their employees. The technology they were using needed to be tested, and the security solutions needed to provide the highest level of protection to prevent cyber attacks and data leakage.

The organisation previously used the Threat Management Gateway (TMG) 2010 access solution for their internal Exchange Server (OWA – Outlook Web Access). They wanted to modernise this solution and introduce additional access protection, such as multi-factor authentication.

The aim of the project was to accomplish the following:

  • Provide secure user access to Outlook Web Access
  • Improve the security of the Exchange Server
  • Replace the existing web gateway solution with a new, more reliable option

Strengthening access management

To facilitate remote resource access, SoftwareOne replaced the client’s TMG 2010 solution with Microsoft Active Directory Federation Services. Now employees can log on to their resources easily and securely with minimal risk of data leakage.

In addition, an extra layer of security was added by installing MFA to further protect their corporate resources and prevent unauthorised access.
